The Article
For Todd Wetsel, service didn’t end when he left the United States Army. It continued through his career, his involvement in the Amarillo community, and his work supporting organizations across the Texas Panhandle. Now, that commitment will take on a new role serving veterans across the state.
Governor Greg Abbott recently appointed Todd Wetsel, Senior Vice President and Trust Investment Officer with FirstBank Southwest Wealth Management, to the Texas Veterans Commission. The state agency serves Texas veterans and their families and works to connect veterans with the benefits, services, and opportunities available to them.
A Life Shaped by Service
A native of Amarillo, Todd Wetsel graduated from Amarillo High School before earning a finance degree from West Texas A&M University. He began his banking career while attending college, but in 2005, his path took a significant turn when he enlisted in the United States Army.

Todd Wetsel served as a Cavalry Scout with the 1st Cavalry Division and completed two combat deployments to Iraq. His military experience would ultimately influence the way he approached his career, leadership, and service to others long after returning home.
Following his military service, Todd Wetsel returned to Amarillo and resumed his career in wealth management. Today, he also serves as vice president of the board for the Texas Panhandle War Memorial, chairman of the Catalyst Committee with the Amarillo Area Foundation, and is a member of the Amarillo Area Estate Planning Council.
His military background, professional career, and community involvement will now come together in a new opportunity to serve veterans across Texas.
Continuing to Serve Texas Veterans
“I was honored and humbled by the opportunity,” said Todd Wetsel. “I’m grateful to Governor Abbott for the chance to continue my service to this country and to Texas veterans by serving on the commission. One of the best ways we can honor our veterans is by ensuring they have access to the benefits, services, and opportunities they earned through their military service.”
For Todd Wetsel, the appointment is also an opportunity to bring lessons learned in the Army into a new type of service. Working alongside people with different backgrounds and experiences toward a shared mission taught him the importance of teamwork, something that has stayed with him throughout his banking career and community involvement.
Andy Marshall, President and CEO of FirstBank Southwest and a veteran himself, understands the significance of the appointment.
“I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Todd and seeing firsthand the passion he has for serving others,” said Andy Marshall, President and CEO of FirstBank Southwest. “As a veteran myself, I understand the impact the Texas Veterans Commission has on the lives of veterans and their families. This appointment speaks to the respect Todd has earned through his military service, his professional career, and his community and regional leadership. It’s a well-deserved honor, and I know Texas veterans will be well served by his voice and perspective.”
For FirstBank Southwest, Todd Wetsel’s appointment is an opportunity to celebrate one of our own while recognizing something much bigger: the importance of continuing to serve those who have served our country.
